Amitabha Buddha Triad by Puyue; Southern Song dynasty

Ink and color on silk

Puyue

CHINA, Zhejiang, Ningbo; Southern Song dynasty

Puyue was a monk and painter from Siming (present day Ningbo, Zhejiang). He is known for his use of black ink in the depiction of clouds to create an atmospheric and three-dimensional feel.
Puyue’s famous work, Amitabha Buddha Triad, is painted on three separate scrolls, each measuring 127 cm high and 48.8 cm wide. His signatures on the paintings indicate that he was from Siming, where he was likely to have inherited the lineage of Song dynasty (960– 1279) master, Zhili of the Tiantai school. The set of paintings was later brought to Japan and kept in Shojokein Temple in Kyoto, as an Important Cultural Property.
