Bodhi

White-character rectangular seal

Bodhi

CHINA; Ming dynasty

The word “Bodhi” means enlightenment, supreme knowledge, or the Path, and refers to the liberating wisdom one may attain from eradicating all worldly defilement. This white seal features bird-worm script, which is a seal script style that artistically interprets a bird’s head and a worm’s body turning and meandering. Utilizing a stylistic approach of adding and removing strokes at random, the result is a unique and distinctive work of art.
Wu Jiong was a seal engraver from Anhui. His style took after that of He Zhen, acquiring the essence of his works in great depth. His style was commended by Dong Qichang, the well-known painter and scholar. His seal style often exhibits heavy strokes that are deeply carved within relatively tight confines, creating a vigorous and exciting composition.
