Su Hanchen was a painter during the transitional period of the Northern Song (960–1127) and Southern Song (1127–1279) dynasties. His specialization was in painting portraits of people. He was the painter-in-attendance in the Imperial Painting Academy between 1119 and 1125, and was praised by Emperor Xiaozong (reigned 1162–1189) of the Southern Song dynasty.
After studying under Liu Zonggu, another painter-in-attendance, he developed his own style of sophisticated and refined work. His paintings, Buddha of the Past and Arhat, are currently kept at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.
