Padmapani Avalokitesvara

Gilt bronze

Padmapani Avalokitesvara

NEPAL; Malla dynasty

The name Padmapani (lotus bearer) is the description of this form of Avalokitesvara and refers to the lotus that the figure carries in the left hand. The whisk held over the right shoulder suggests that the figure is an attendant to a Buddha. Behind the three-leaf crown is a high topknot ornamented with a gem. More jewelry inlaid with semi-precious stones decorates the bared upper body and a sacred thread falls to the thighs from the left shoulder. The figure sits in a loosely cross-legged posture with head lowered and leaning to the right.
