Mathura: Standing Buddha

Mathura: Standing Buddha

INDIA, Uttar Pradesh, Mathura

The statue was discovered at Jamalpur, Mathura. The Buddha has features such as the usnisa, elongated earlobes, and three lines on the neck. The figure has broad shoulders and a diaphanous monastic robe with shallow, rippling folds. The treatment of the hand where it holds a corner of the garment is detailed, as are the feet, near which are small figures of kneeling devotees.
The nimbus is intricately carved with exquisite patterns. A lotus is at the center, followed by makaras with garlands of flowers emerging from their mouths. The outer borders are decorated with flowers and birds. An inscription along the front of the pedestal identifies Yasadinna as the donor.
