Bazhong Rock Carvings Southern Niche 87: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Sichuan, Bazhong; Tang dynasty

This carving is located within the inner niche of Southern Niche 87. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is depicted wearing a headdress containing a Buddha image, a long, gown-like garment, numerous ornaments, draped ribbons, bracelets, armlets, and a long stole. One hand holds a vase while the other raises a willow branch. The Bodhisattva’s waist is slightly bent. Behind the statue is a multi-layered nimbus painted in varying colors.
There is a long inscription outside of the niche which states that the creation of the sculpture was proposed to the deputy head of the legislative bureau by Bazhou governor Yan Wu and constructed thereafter. It further denotes that in 759, a stele was carved by Han Ji, the judge of Dali and chief clerk of Bazhou, which honors the depiction of Avalokitesvara and the efforts of Yan Wu.
