This pair of couplet verses, each measuring 136 cm by 34.5 cm, was written by Master Yuanying and dedicated to monk Deliang. The work has a general style that accommodates both regular and running scripts. Certain strokes are simplified, much like cursive writings, but the form, composition, and overall definition remains largely regular in style and feel. The strong and steady brushwork is joined with a consistent execution of both vertical and horizontal strokes, and the even thrust of pressure from start to end results in a fluid tone and balanced form.
Yuanying was a highly renowned monastic and the 40th generation lineage disciple of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. He was accomplished in poetry and calligraphy, and was actively engaged in community work. He established a school for the Sangha and laity, set up the Ningbo Buddhist Orphanage, and organized the Monastic Rescue Squad that aided wounded soldiers and civilians seeking refuge during the war.
