Jindaiji Temple Sakyamuni Hall: Sakyamuni Buddha

Gilt bronze

Jindaiji Temple Sakyamuni Hall: Sakyamuni Buddha

JAPAN, Tokyo, Chofu; Hakuho period

This statue was cast using the lost-wax method. The head and body are hollow and any original gilding is lost.
The statue has a usnisa with the curled hair suggested by hammering. The facial features and three lines on the neck are stylized in their geometrical presentation. The fingers on the hands are damaged but the Buddha’s right hand is raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra while the left hand makes the vitarka (teaching) mudra. The figure sits on a cloth-covered bench with legs pendent and is dressed in monastic robes. The emphasized folds cascade downwards from the left shoulder, but those over the legs are only suggested.
