Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Gilt leaded bronze

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Tang dynasty

Avalokitesvara stands in a sinuous posture, reinforced by the rhythmic fall of the stole, headdress ribbons and the graceful curve of the raised right arm. A large headdress is dominated by the figure of Amitabha Buddha. The figure’s eyes on the moon-like face are lowered in contemplation. The vase held in the right hand has a lid shaped like a bird, a form popular during the High Tang period (712–756). The left hand extends downward to hold the end of the ribbon away from the long skirt.
