Pingliang: Seated Buddha
CHINA, Gansu, Pingliang; Sixteen Kingdoms
Unearthed in 1975, the statue consists of a Buddha seated in a variation of the dhyana (meditation) mudra on a lion throne. The figure wears a round collared monastic robe with his head inclined forward. There is an intersecting aureole and lotus nimbus shaded by a parasol behind the figure. There are holes located along the edge of the parasol, from which bells or other objects once hung. The composition rests on a decorated four-legged stand.
