Gao Zhengchen was born in Guangping (present day Suxian, Suzhou). He was a renowned calligrapher who was famed for his Wang Xizhi-style regular script, in addition to his running and cursive script works.
His work, Memorial Stele of Ming Shenshao at Qixia Temple, is located outside the mountain gate of Qixia Temple in Jiangsu. The stele measures 274 cm high, 121 cm wide, and has a thickness of 36 cm. Comprised of 33 lines and 74 characters in total, the content was composed by Emperor Gaozong (reigned 649–683) of the Tang dynasty in the year 676, and it was transcribed by Gao Zhengchen in running script. Wang Zhijing wrote the signboard, which contains the title of the stele. The characters of “Qixia” on the back of the stele are believed to have been written by Emperor Gaozong.
