Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Gilt bronze

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Sui dynasty

The figure stands on a pedestal that is supported on a four-legged stand of a type first seen around 518 to 524 during the Northern Wei dynasty. This type of stand remained popular during the Sui dynasty (581–618), but was seldom found later. The figure wears a headdress and a stole, while the lower body is covered in a thin skirt. The right arm is raised to the chest. There are flame patterns about the petal-shaped mandorla, which encloses a lotus nimbus. An inscription on the side of the stand states Liu Guangda dedicated the statue in 597.
