Seated Buddha

Gilt bronze

Seated Buddha

CHINA; Tang dynasty

The Buddha sits cross-legged with one hand raised as if teaching, while the other hand rests on the knee. The eyes are lowered and the mouth is set in a firm shape. A moon disc is mounted in front of the high usnisa. The figure’s robust body is covered in a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare and reveals a checkered inner robe. The robe material spills over the throne with the folds depicted in detail. While it appears as though the composition is balanced on the longer folds, it is, in fact, on a square base.
