Miaoying

CHINA; Southern Song dynasty

Miaoying, commonly known as Master Tong, was a monk and sculptor. According to a revised edition of Suzhou Gazetteer, published during the rule of Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1736–1795) of the Qing dynasty, he resided at Longxing Temple in Jiangsu between 1174 and 1189. Master Miaoying was known to have created a stele with a depiction of Subhuti that was based on a painting by Wang Han, and a relief of the Five Hundred Arhats. In addition, he is attributed with the sculpting of a vivid image of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in Huqiu, Suzhou.
