I Would Die Happy by Li Yinsang; 20th century

White-character square seal

Li Yinsang

CHINA, Jiangsu, Suzhou

Li Yinsang was a seal engraver and archaeologist from Wuxian (present day Suzhou, Jiangsu). His original name was Li Mingke, and he was also known as Hu Fu. Li studied painting, calligraphy, seal carving, and classical texts under Huang Shiling.
His seal carvings are sharp and accurate. The smaller the engraving, the more precise his lines seemed to become. His designs are precise yet naturally composed, and their controlled variations made Li’s works reputable throughout the Lingnan region of Southern China. His extant seals include Stone Buddha Made During the Datong Period, Hanjin Zhaizang, and I Would Die Happy. His written works are Seal Collection of Yigou Shi, Seal of Li Xizhai, and Manuscript of the Cycle of Wu Yin.
