Contemplate Words of Chan by Zhao Mu; Qing dynasty

White-character square seal

Zhao Mu

CHINA, Jiangsu, Changzhou; Qing dynasty

Zhao Mu was a seal engraver from Piling (present day Changzhou, Jiangsu). He studied seal engraving under Wu Xizai in his early years, and created a distinctive style integrating the features of the Qin (220–207 BCE) and Han (206 BCE–220 CE) dynasties, as well as the Anhui and Zhejiang schools. Engravings by Zhao show cuts that are unadorned, sensuous, and full of energy. His Buddhist seal works include Contemplate Words of Chan.
Zhao was also skilled in calligraphy, Buddhist painting, bamboo engraving, and clay pot making. His written works include Seals of Shuangqingge and Seal Collections of Zhao Mu.
