Rubbing

Wu Tongwei

CHINA, Jiangsu, Donghai; Tang dynasty

Wu Tongwei was a high ranking official and calligrapher who specialized in running-cursive script. During his time, most calligraphers wrote in the “Yan script” style introduced by Yan Zhenqing, but Wu’s calligraphy differed in that it showed influence of styles from the Cao Wei Kingdom (220–265) and Jin dynasty (265–420). Stele of Master Chujin, a masterpiece exhibiting his calligraphy, was engraved in regular script on the back of the Stele of Prabhutaratna Pagoda. A rubbing of the stele calligraphy is now kept at the National Library of China in Beijing.
