Longquan: Shrine with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Zhejiang, Lishui; Yuan dynasty

Made in Longquan, this shrine depicts Avalokitesvara seated in lotus position wearing a robe that covers both shoulders and hangs down over the seat. The Bodhisattva has a crown with an image of Amitabha Buddha in the center and ribbons that hang down to the shoulders.
The upper edge of the shrine is decorated with cloud-like designs; in the center is an image of the sun. On either side of the seat is an attendant making an offering. Beneath the attendants are Bodhisattvas. A relief of two lotus flowers on the end of stalks is depicted in the center of the platform. At the bottom of the platform there is a representation of the sea.
