Leifeng Pagoda: Tile Caps with Lotus Design

CHINA, Zhejiang, Hangzhou; Five Dynasties

Nearly 120 tiles were excavated from Leifeng Pagoda. The most common were those with a lotus motif. These tile caps have a diameter of 14.6 cm to 16 cm, and a thickness of 1.6 cm to 2.4 cm. The lotus seedpod in the center of each tile contains five to nine seeds. The number of petals is commonly eight, but there are also up to 16 petals. The petals can be large or slim with fine detail.
