Aay Grotto: Wall with the Medicine Buddha

Aay Grotto: Medicine Buddha

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

This image of the Medicine Buddha is painted on the right side of the left wall. He holds a transparent medicine bowl in his left hand and a monk’s staff in his right. The Buddha wears long robes with wide sleeves and the inner robe is tied at the waist with a sash. The cartouches to the left of the Buddha read, “Medicine Buddha, commissioned by the pious Buddhist, Kou Tingjun” and “respectfully recorded by Yang Ai, a pious Buddhist and ambassador.” This is one of the better preserved paintings of the Medicine Buddha found within the Kuchean caves.
