Todaiji Temple Shosoin: Incense Burner

JAPAN, Nara

This incense burner measures 22.6 cm high with a diameter of 39.3 cm. The bowl is shallow with a flat base, which is supported by five bronze legs in the form of muscular lions standing on their hind legs with tails curled upward. In between the lions are double-ring handles from which the burner could be suspended. The detail of the lions is in marked contrast with the plain bowl of the burner.
