Xilingol: Four-Armed Avalokitesvara

CHINA, Inner Mongolia, Xilingol; Qing dynasty

This 18th century statue was discovered from monastery ruins near Dolon Nor in Xilingol during the 1930s. The figure is four armed and seated in full lotus position. The two hands at the chest initially held a jewel but it is now missing, while the other pair of hands hold prayer beads and a lotus. The openwork crown is inlaid with semi-precious stones, as is the rest of the jewelry. A Buddha can be seen standing on top of the Bodhisattva’s head.
