Anyue Huayan Cave 1: Maitreya Bodhisattva

CHINA, Sichuan, Ziyang; Northern Song dynasty

This carving, located on the left wall of the cave, depicts Maitreya, one of the Twelve Perfect Enlightenment Bodhisattvas. Maitreya wears a headdress featuring a Buddha image, and there is a colorful wave-patterned nimbus painted on the wall behind the head. The face is round and the eyes are nearly closed. The Bodhisattva wears a robe, chest ornaments, and a bracelet. The right foot rests on a lotus, while the left foot is placed on the right knee. The right hand grasps the furled hem of the robe, which has been engraved using the openwork method. Intricate details give the figure a realistic, elegant appearance.
