Buddha Triad

KOREA; Unified Silla dynasty

The stele is carved from a single piece of dark brown chaoite. It was listed as Treasure No. 742 in 1982.
The damaged head of the main figure has been partially repaired. The Buddha wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders but is opened at the front to reveal the inner robe. The figure sits in full lotus position on a rudimentary lotus throne, with hands most likely forming the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras. A lotus nimbus with a geometric flower design on the outer rim is behind the Buddha’s head. There are remnants of a flame pattern at the sides suggesting an enclosing mandorla. The Bodhisattvas standing on either side have only a plain lotus nimbus and carry offerings in the hand closest to the Buddha.
