Drotsang Monastery Prosperous Nation Hall: Life of the Buddha - Defeat of Mara

CHINA, Qinghai, Ledu; Ming dynasty

This mural, one of the best in Drotsang Monastery, is located along the veranda of the Prosperous Nation Hall. It depicts Mara leading his demons to obstruct the Buddha from gaining enlightenment. The demons are vividly portrayed with green or blue skin and long hair. They hold different weapons and appear wrathful. Their muscles are exaggerated and their clothing flutters behind them, suggesting movement.
