This painting, located on the left side of the north wall, is an extension of the illustration of the Mahaparinirvana Sutra on the back (west) wall.
The painting depicts monks in deep mourning after receiving the news of the Buddha’s passing into parinirvana. Some of the monks express their sorrow openly and do not hide their grief, while others mourn with their hands covering their mouth or head. Using detailed facial features, the artist was able to vividly convey each character’s emotion.
