Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Niche 253: Avalokitesvara and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu; Northern Song dynasty

Situated in the northern section of the Beishan site, this niche is 1.22 m wide, 1.57 m high, and 0.86 m deep. The figures in the niche are portrayed according to descriptions in the Sutra on the Ten Kings of Hell. The two central statues are Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, both of whom stand on lotus pedestals. There is a flame-patterned nimbus behind each figure’s head. Ksitigarbha is portrayed as a young monk wearing a monastic robe and earrings. Avalokitesvara wears a headdress and a flowing robe. Unfortunately, these figures have suffered some weathering, and some parts of the statues have broken off.
Six clouds-like shapes containing various figures are carved on the side walls of the niche, arranged into three tiers. Each figure is dressed in a different style and is depicted with a different posture. Based on what remains of the original inscriptions, it can be discerned that these figures are the Ten Kings of Hell, various court officials, and attendants. Outside the niche is an inscription stating that the niche was carved by the locals of Dazu in 994 of the Northern Song dynasty.
