Figurine of Bodhidharma

牙雕達摩拂子 北尾重政

日本十九世紀作品,表現達摩面壁坐禪像。達摩祖師於中國南朝梁武帝(502~549在位)時渡海至廣州,武帝遣使迎至建業(今南京),但與武帝話不相契,遂渡江至北魏(386~534),止嵩山少林寺。九年期間面壁坐禪,稱壁觀婆羅門,後傳法予慧可,為中國禪宗初祖。
 象牙質,達摩坐在拂子上。拂子紮成束狀,纏繞卷曲,作髮絲紋樣,下部設一短柄。達摩臉部微俯,雙手藏於袖內,狀若卵圓形。其於坐禪期間,雙腿逐漸衰萎,並將眼瞼切除以避免睡著,故呈現出瞪眼及無雙腿之形象。
