日本十九世紀作品，表現達摩面壁坐禪像。達摩祖師於中國南朝梁武帝（502～549在位）時渡海至廣州，武帝遣使迎至建業（今南京），但與武帝話不相契，遂渡江至北魏（386～534），止嵩山少林寺。九年期間面壁坐禪，稱壁觀婆羅門，後傳法予慧可，為中國禪宗初祖。
象牙質，達摩坐在拂子上。拂子紮成束狀，纏繞卷曲，作髮絲紋樣，下部設一短柄。達摩臉部微俯，雙手藏於袖內，狀若卵圓形。其於坐禪期間，雙腿逐漸衰萎，並將眼瞼切除以避免睡著，故呈現出瞪眼及無雙腿之形象。
