該像約雕造於九世紀初，據傳為平安時代（794～1185）初期日本奈良法華寺中維摩法會之主尊。其造型據《維摩詰所說經》卷五〈問疾品〉所作，表現維摩詰老貌瘦軀坐於病榻上與文殊菩薩論法的姿態。其結構經由X光照射與整修時的圖片顯示，包括手腕、雙腳在內皆以榧木整材雕出。外表全面裹麻布塗錆漆後再作潤飾，妝彩，膝蓋部分則塗以木屑漆，可見柔和的衣紋表現。一八九九年指定為日本重要文化財。
維摩詰戴頭巾，雙眉微蹙，口微張似在說話，雙目垂視，表情祥和。身著寬大衣服，敞開前襟，露出肋骨，以示病容。身軀稍微後仰，採兩小腿交叉之坐姿，手執如意（後來補上），袖口如風鼓動般的翻起。刀法銳利，形象生動逼真，被視為係奈良時代（710～794）至平安時代過渡期之作。
