此像是清乾隆二十六年(1761)由西藏進貢清廷的達賴喇嘛源流組畫之一。六世達賴倉央嘉措(tshangs dbyangs rgya mtsho)是西藏歷史上頗有爭議的一名人物,遭廢黜達賴地位並於康熙四十五年(1706)由蒙古軍解送北京的路上,於青海湖圓寂。大清王朝一直不承認其地位,然此唐卡的進獻,表明清政府對六世達賴的重新默認。
 不同於一般達賴像的背景布局,此處背景中無藏式建築的描繪,而以一片碧波代表六世達賴的圓寂地青海湖。作品上方的山巒層疊,流水潺湲,還有環繞其間的藍白卷雲,為明顯的漢畫元素;構圖與裝飾明顯受到明代(1368~1644)山水畫的影響。主尊巨大身形與圖左下角的微型小人物形成強烈對比,彰顯其尊貴。髮絲、鬍鬚、鬢毛處理細膩,是漢畫人物寫實的特質。畫頂中央處藍、綠、棕三色多層山巖,是十七世紀發展出來並延續至十八世紀的噶瑪噶舉派畫風。
