文殊菩薩白色身相，結跏趺坐，右手外伸持蓮花，花上立寶劍，左手當胸拈長莖蓮，花上托經書，是文殊菩薩的典型形象。圖左上方為宗喀巴（tsong kha pa），右上方是成就師法金剛。
在西藏人民心目中，通常將達賴喇嘛視為觀音菩薩的化身，而將漢地的皇帝視為文殊菩薩的化現。此幅唐卡為清乾隆四十五年（1780），帝七十大壽時，由六世班禪進宮敬獻。
據經文所載，文殊師利菩薩生於舍衛國婆羅門家，從其母右脇下出生即能言語，有如天童子。身呈紫金色，頂有七寶華蓋覆之。又載，文殊師利菩薩有無量神通、變現，若有眾生聞文殊師利菩薩名，可除卻十二億劫生死之罪；若禮拜供養者，生生世世生於諸佛之家，並為文殊師利菩薩所護念。
