達摩於少林寺內面壁坐禪九年，時人不解其意，稱壁觀婆羅門。此作採用仿石雕的藝術效果，追求古樸和滄桑的感覺。在人物刻劃上，僅頭部較為清晰，方正的面孔表現出達摩堅毅的決心，身體、台座等部分進行簡略和虛化的處理。
整件作品以中溫燒製，用適量的酸液造成腐蝕的斑駁感，顯得粗放大氣，莊重古拙。
