該作品以中間的莨苕葉浮雕分為上下兩部分。上部主題是帝釋窟說法：佛陀於石室禪修時，帝釋天與眾神前往拜會，樂神般遮翼奏樂歌唱讚頌佛的功德。佛陀得知眾神來意，即為帝釋天等開演說法，眾天人圍繞讚歎。下部則為燃燈佛授記圖，表現釋迦牟尼於過去世誠心供養燃燈佛，燃燈佛為其授記的本生故事。
此作品以高浮雕的表現手法雕造，空間表現上具有更為豐富的層次感，呈現立體真實的情境。燃燈佛授記的儒童本生故事，詮釋了佛傳的緣起，幾乎收入所有的佛傳文本，因而也出現在佛傳故事圖像中。但是，此作品中的兩個部分雖然都是犍陀羅浮雕常見的題材，但鮮少相鄰組合在同一件作品中。
