此經刊本原為日本奈良西大寺所藏興正菩薩叡尊像之裝藏品，該像造於鎌倉弘安三年（1280），時為中國元至元十七年。此《妙法蓮華經》刊刻時間應更早，後輾轉流傳至日本。卷首圖左下角有「方至刊」三字。方至係活動於金陵（今南京）的版畫刻工，時間在一二○八至一二八○年間。
此圖表現釋迦牟尼佛說法的場景。佛結跏趺坐於束腰蓮座上，前設香案，兩側有二力士，身後為十弟子，其次是四天王、明王等護法眾。兩旁還有乘雲而至的天眾。最外兩側是趺坐於束腰蓮座的二大菩薩，其頭光和身光相連如火焰狀，格外醒目。香案前有一僧人及王族等文武官員跪坐合掌。
