興福寺四天王像

位於北圓堂。據增長天王、多聞天王的台座銘文記載,為奈良延曆十年(791)所作,原屬大安寺。鎌倉弘安八年(1285)興福寺僧經玄修復造像,安置於興福寺勸學院,後移至北圓堂迄今。一九五六年指定為日本國寶。
 四天王皆由檜木整材雕出,再以小材接合細部,背面施以內刳,像高134.4~139.1公分。以木心乾漆技法雕造衣袖、帔帛等懸垂部分,內嵌彎曲鐵線,再黏貼麻布,後以木屑漆塑形,頭髮、甲衣、腰帶及帔帛等厚塗乾漆,表現其立體及柔軟的質感。
 四天王身軀矮胖,短頸,雙目圓睜,眼珠大而鼓出,或閉口,或張口作怒吼狀;挽起袖子,或雙手交叉於胸前,或隻手高舉作執武器姿態,動作誇張,詼諧生動。增長天王戴頭盔,其餘三尊皆束髮髻。身著鎧甲,戴護臂袖套,穿上護腿脛具,岔開雙足,腳踩邪鬼,顯示威猛英姿。造型寫實,洋溢量感。具奈良時代(710~794)末期至平安時代(794~1185)初期造像之特徵,為此時期雕刻之代表作。
