Saioji Temple: Master Baozhi

該像雕造於日本平安時代(794~1185)十一世紀,依寶誌和尚的神奇事蹟所刻製。寶誌和尚為中國南北朝時代(386~589)之神僧。據《佛祖統記》、《佛祖歷代通載》等記載,梁武帝(502~549在位)曾敕命畫家張僧繇描繪和尚肖像,和尚用手指著自己的臉,頓時顏面內現十一面觀音,慈悲、威嚇的面容自在變化,而讓張僧繇無法畫出。此軼聞顯示和尚為觀音菩薩之化身,其神奇變化之姿已見於南朝梁(502~557)的繪畫和雕刻。
 該像以針葉木整材雕出,整體以鉈雕之技法雕造,外表尚留有圓鑿痕跡,猶如未完成階段的粗雕。背面刳孔,外表嵌上蓋板,內藏的物品已佚。由肩至肘、袖之寬度稍微窄小內縮。和尚跣足立於蓮台上,臉龐從中央左右縱向切開,內出現一面,表情靜謐,雙手舉至胸前,左手握寶瓶,右手手指微開,為難得一見的獨特造型。
