Not Bound By Matter

放情物外 東臯心越

「放情物外」意指明白世間萬象之理,且能超然於物外,不受拘束與羈絆,所謂「寄託情志」。此為清(1644~1911)初僧人心越禪師的篆刻作品。
 心越受明代(1368~1644)篆刻家何震印風影響,風格爽利清新。何震的篆刻承襲文彭,雖拘於師門法脈,但能改變文氣、秀潤的風貌,而參以猛利的風格,所以呈現出強悍、生辣之風,其名聲廣布藝林,彼時影響深遠。
 此印是參照何震的「放情詩酒」白文長方章而作,「放情」二字與何震的印文極為相似,而「物外」的印文風格,則與何震的「柴門深處」印文相去不遠。作者對印面的布局,處理得疏密有致,且篆法靈巧活潑,不是方正單調的結構,有別於常見的漢印字體。
 在運刀方面,雖沒有何震般的猛利,但用刀挺拔含蓄。全印仍呈現出雄強豪放的氣魄。
 心越俗姓蔣,名興儔、兆隱,字心越,號東臯,又號樵雲。浙江浦江人。善書畫,工篆刻。初為壽昌寺無明禪師的法嗣,後住杭州永福寺。清康熙二十年(1681),應日本澄一禪師之邀東渡日本,住長崎興福寺,後駐錫水戶岱宗山天德寺。心越除傳法外,亦教授篆刻,從中國帶去的工具書《古篆匯選》,透過門生廣為傳播,一時洛陽紙貴,使篆刻藝術得以蓬勃發展,是日本篆刻的推手,與獨立禪師並列為「日本篆刻界鼻祖」。
