Chionji Temple: Master Shandao

據日本京都知恩寺傳記載，此幅畫為天台僧顯真於鎌倉文治二年（1186）以大原談義，即舉行念佛論議之因緣，臨摹善導大師肖像，作為供養。其後，室町天文九年（1540）天台座主（住持）贈與知恩寺二十五世傳譽上人。圖上方為曇省的題贊，書有中國南宋高宗紹興三十一年（1161）的紀年，得知是以南宋（1127～1279）畫作為底本於日本繪製，是日本現存善導大師畫像之代表作。一九○○年指定為日本重要文化財。
圖中善導身披袈裟，仰望上空，雙手合掌一心念佛，表情愉悅。口中出五身化佛，露齒、舌頭轉動，彷彿聽見其念佛聲音。身後有中國風的欄杆。作品以暗色背景突顯人物，線描生硬，衲衣、袈裟皆飾以碎金紋樣。
