此圖描繪中國禪宗六祖惠能作務之姿。惠能少年喪父，家境清寒，隨母採薪度日，聞人誦讀《金剛般若波羅蜜多經》而歸向佛門，拜五祖弘忍為師，師命其至大寮（廚房）作務。圖中為惠能八個月間舂米修行之神態，圖上方有無學祖元禪師之題贊。繪製於十三世紀。現為日本重要文化財。
惠能戴頭巾，雙手伸入兩袖中，嘴唇緊閉，眼神清澈。衣著簡樸，腰身繫帶，小腿以下褲管鬆散，足履鞋，肩後背著搗米木棒，身軀略微傴僂。此圖以水墨為基調，筆觸細緻，線條流暢，衣裳以多層襞褶表現出坡作務的情景，寫實自然。
