禪會圖主要描繪俗家弟子向禪師問道的情景，如藥山惟儼與李翱、大顛寶通與韓愈、鳥窠道林與白居易、馬祖道一與龐蘊等。據《景德傳燈錄》卷十四記載，李翱問藥山惟儼禪師：「如何是道？」惟儼指指天空，又指瓶子，李翱不知所以，惟儼便說：「雲在青天水在瓶。」此圖岩上置一水瓶，推測描繪的是唐代（618～907）朗州刺史李翱問道於禪僧藥山惟儼的情景。
圖中禪師坐於岩上，岩上置一水瓶，其前著官服者籠袖而立。畫面神韻清新，人物衣紋以淡墨畫輪廓，用筆簡練流暢，起落自然。此作畫風古拙，推測為中國南宋（1127～1279）早期的作品。
