Sainenji Temple: Master Huike Cutting off His Arm

慧可斷臂圖 雪舟等楊

此圖描繪禪宗二祖慧可立雪斷臂求法的情景,為日本雪舟等楊晚年之作。現為日本重要文化財。雪舟為室町時代(1392~1573)畫僧,水墨畫之集大成者,以明晰的空間構圖和蒼勁的筆勢為其特徵,開創室町時代水墨畫的嶄新作風。
 圖中達摩祖師於嵩山少林寺面壁坐禪,結跏趺坐於蒲團上。身後為禪宗二祖慧可,初次拜謁達摩,請求收為弟子,未獲許可,立於雪中度過一晚,並自斷手臂,以示求道的決心。
 達摩目光炯炯有神,長眉、濃鬚之梵相,筆法雄渾有力,眼瞳接近上眼瞼,表現戲劇性瞬間的緊張感。岩壁採皴法描繪,將線條反覆皴擦,表現岩石之脈絡紋理和堅實的量感,用粗大的輪廓線從外側暈染,墨色渾厚,與淡墨的衣紋線形成鮮明對比。
