「老棄敦煌」是張大千語，為了探索古人的繪畫奧秘，其於一九一四年赴敦煌莫高窟臨摹壁畫，表示為再登藝術高峰的誓言和獻身藝術的精神。
此印規矩工穩，用刀勁挺，印文恬靜秀美；邊框線條極細，突顯印文，整體以纖麗取勝。其師趙叔孺譽其：「刻印醇厚，元朱文為近代第一。」
陳巨來原名斝，字巨來，號塙齋、安持，別署安持老人。浙江平湖人。精篆刻，為趙叔孺弟子，初究程邃、汪關、巴慰祖，後致力於古璽、秦漢印，作品清秀明快，印文娟美，用刀勁挺而極細膩，尤以元朱文印造詣最著，藝名蜚聲海內外。名書畫家張大千、溥心畬、吳湖帆等人的用印，多出其手。
