虛堂智愚約書於十三世紀下半葉。此卷為其書贈日僧無象靜照的書跡，指示求取禪法之道，除了要專心致志、突破險阻外，更應直行正道，不為瑣事、煩惱等干擾，方能悟道。無象靜照於宋咸淳元年（1265）歸國，故推測此卷應為虛堂智愚八十歲所書。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
此卷於無象靜照攜回日本後，曾因眾人爭奪而有所破損，故有《破虛堂》之稱。其書風楷意重，用筆與結字略有裝飾性，如卷中「日」、「者」字皆是。又能善用快速連帶的用筆調和整體，因此整幅既無拘滯之弊，行筆亦有流利之趣味，是兼顧創作性與風格穩重的好作品。
虛堂智愚俗姓陳，法名智愚，號虛堂、息耕叟。南宋（1127～1279）臨濟宗楊岐派禪僧。四明象山（今浙江象山）人。門下有眾多中、日僧人，其墨跡傳入日本後，被茶道界奉為神品。
