虛堂智愚約書於十三世紀下半葉。此卷為其書贈日僧無象靜照的書跡,指示求取禪法之道,除了要專心致志、突破險阻外,更應直行正道,不為瑣事、煩惱等干擾,方能悟道。無象靜照於宋咸淳元年(1265)歸國,故推測此卷應為虛堂智愚八十歲所書。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
 此卷於無象靜照攜回日本後,曾因眾人爭奪而有所破損,故有《破虛堂》之稱。其書風楷意重,用筆與結字略有裝飾性,如卷中「日」、「者」字皆是。又能善用快速連帶的用筆調和整體,因此整幅既無拘滯之弊,行筆亦有流利之趣味,是兼顧創作性與風格穩重的好作品。
 虛堂智愚俗姓陳,法名智愚,號虛堂、息耕叟。南宋(1127~1279)臨濟宗楊岐派禪僧。四明象山(今浙江象山)人。門下有眾多中、日僧人,其墨跡傳入日本後,被茶道界奉為神品。
