據圖上方的金泥楷書漢字榜題，得知繪製於「萬曆四年（1576）」，即朝鮮宣祖九年，比丘尼慧圓、慧月因舊幀漫漶不清，得宮廷出資，為祈願宣祖（1568～1608在位）及其王室嬪妃等聖壽萬歲而製。為朝鮮（1392～1910）前期佛教故事畫的頂峰作品。
圖中大略依《觀無量壽經》序分義，以阿闍世王為主角的故事內容描繪。共二十一個場面，場景之間以雲紋區隔，採連續性的布局，畫面由下而上方式展開故事情節。各場面旁皆以金泥書寫韓文輔助說明故事內容，與朝鮮世祖四年（1458）刊行的《月印釋譜》卷八〈安樂國太子經〉內容一致。整幅構圖繁複，色彩華麗，描繪精細，紋樣細緻，具朝鮮前期宮廷佛畫之特色。
