此幅墨跡是道潛禪師贈與道友淑通教授（宋代職名）的尺牘，內容敘述自己的生活近況。道潛為宋代（960～1279）雲門宗僧，詩文卓越，與當時文人多有往來，蘇軾曾稱讚其詩句清絕，「道潛」之號，即蘇軾所命名。
道潛俗姓何，名曇潛。法名道潛，號參寥子。生卒年不詳，活躍於北宋（960～1127）這一書法史上的黃金期，又與大書家蘇軾相交往，故其書寫有東坡之風。道潛另有《景德寺轉輪藏記》傳世，正與蘇軾《宸奎閣碑》書風相類；而此卷結字用筆一如蘇軾尺牘，但較為平正。就書寫品質來說，可說是非常好的一件作品。
參考釋文：道潛啟今春楚大師還序／書劇懃無似深荷／故人不忘久要感慰無已冬／寒不審此來／傳道外／體履佳否何如奉惟／安勝僕自去年十二月往外／邑於潛至今年八月末方還／湖上所以久不獲修記上問／動止唯傾倒／左右未始須臾忘去也歲律／道盡未緣并合仰乞／君子為時自愛不一一道潛狀／淑通教授道友 十一月望
