法隆寺四天王像

日本

位於金堂須彌壇四隅。據廣目天王頭光銘文「山口大口費上而次/木●(t)二人作也」,多聞天王頭光銘文「藥師德保上而/鐵師●(u)古二人作 也」,得知其造像作者。《日本書紀》白鳳白雉元年(650)條文中亦有山口直大口曾奉敕刻千佛像,推測二者是同一人,為飛鳥時代(538~645)末期活躍的雕刻家。由此推知該像雕造於七世紀,是日本現存年代最早的四天王像。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
 東方持國天王和南方增長天王持寶劍和三叉戟,西方廣目天王持筆把卷,北方多聞天王則手托寶塔並握戟。四天王皆臉形長圓,杏仁形的眼睛,眉頭緊蹙,閉口,表情堅毅。身軀結實豐潤,直立於邪鬼上。透雕的高聳寶冠部分破損,帶圓形頭光,手肘緊貼身軀,衣褶呈直線階梯式,左右對稱,具穩重厚實感。帔帛垂落體側,接近裙襬處向前翹起。衣紋的表現、直立的姿態,顯示出飛鳥時代的樣式。
 從頭光、身軀、邪鬼至台座由樟木整材雕出,內部不刳空。外表尚留有華麗色彩,部分貼金和漆繪。寶冠、腰部甲胄的邊飾、臂釧、腕釧以及頭光的周緣皆飾有銅板透雕的金具,展示當時的金工技法。
