唐招提寺四天王像

位於金堂須彌壇四隅,分別是東方持國天王、南方增長天王、西方廣目天王、北方多聞天王。一九五三年指定為日本國寶。
 四天王像或戴頭盔,或綰髮髻,身著鎧甲、墊肩、護脛。鎧甲內著大衣,露出似魚鰭狀的袖口,腰身下的長裙後襬垂至足踝,身軀較長,腰部以下顯得厚重。濃眉大眼,眉頭緊縮鼓出,眼梢上揚,或開口作喝斥狀;或緊閉嘴唇,作瞋怒狀。
 持國天王左手握刀劍,右手貼近左腕;增長天王右手上舉握獨股杵,左手叉腰;廣目天王右手執筆,左手捧卷;多聞天王則右手托寶塔,左手握三叉戟。
 四天王均作武士打扮,衣紋刻劃簡潔,動作較為保守,形象剛直。其技法、結構、作風與該寺金堂梵天及帝釋天像幾乎相同,推測係同一雕刻家或同一工房所製;另一說是八世紀下半葉隨鑑真渡日的唐代(618~907)匠師所作。頭部至足下岩台皆由檜木整材雕出,再接合手腕、袖、鞋尖等細部,背面腰帶上下刳空,再嵌上長方形蓋板,妝彩、漆繪金箔,部分以乾漆潤飾完成。現今色彩已剝落,唯臉部尚留綠青色。
