興福寺四天王像

位於東金堂須彌壇,像高153~164公分不等。除增長天王右手叉腰外,其餘像容依《陀羅尼集經》之記述而雕造。從頭部至足踏邪鬼、岩座,大致由檜木整材雕造,頭髮、甲冑周緣等細部以木屑漆塑形,帛帶及邪鬼豎起的頭髮以鐵線為芯,再貼上麻布、厚塗木屑漆,乃繼承奈良時代(710~794)的技法。一九五二年指定為日本國寶。
 東方持國天王右手托寶珠,西方廣目天王右手舉●(Q)索,北方多聞天王右手捧寶塔,南方增長天王右手按於腰間;除持國天王左手握劍,其餘皆左手持三叉戟。四天王均體格短胖,身形圓潤,富有量感,乃平安時代(794~1185)初期的造像特徵。雙目圓睜,眉毛橫豎,身披鎧甲,足踏邪鬼,姿態威猛,帔帛繞肩轉向身側翻轉揚起,表現動感。衣紋刻劃深入,襞褶清晰,無過多飾物,樸實簡約。外表施以綠青、膚色、紫、白綠等色彩,並以墨色勾勒紋樣,細膩具體。其技法和作風被視為九世紀初之作。
