Daikakuji Temple: Biography of Master Kukai (detail)

弘法大師傳 後宇多天皇

日本

後宇多天皇(1274~1287在位)四十九歲時所書。全文四十一行,計五百七十六字。此卷為後宇多天皇於空海大師冥誕時,書寫其傳記而成。一九五四年指定為日本國寶。
 後宇多天皇深於學術與佛學,於京都教王護國寺受真言密教灌頂,並深研真言密教奧義。此卷內容不止是空海的傳記,就連書風上,也看得出與空海有密切聯繫,甚至與空海有共同的顏真卿風格,故此卷更有豁然直截的大方氣概。
 後宇多天皇名世仁,為日本第九十一代天皇。皈依空海大師,於教王護國寺接受傳法灌頂,熱衷於佛法修行。
