增長天王像

增長天王又稱南方天王,為四天王之一。四天王乃承襲印度教的神祇,後被佛教尊為護法神,其信仰自古以來極為盛行,中國或日本均存有許多遺品,其形象亦各有不同。
 此天王站立岩石上,左手執戟,右手叉腰,右膝微彎,重心置於左足,身軀略呈「S」形,雖高僅有1公尺餘,但因體態修長而顯得高大。天王凸出的大眼、濃眉、下咧的嘴唇,表現對無明眾生的喝斥。
 此像雕刻採分段式,雕後再組合,避免整塊雕刻過程因熱脹冷縮而裂開。面部表情傳神,腰帶盤結處等皆雕刻得細緻微妙,外表彩繪貼金箔,為日本鎌倉時代(1185~1333)作品中的傑作之一。
